The (Painted) Christmas Story

By 6:00 AM

I've had the opportunity to view some of the most beautiful and moving art over the past few of days at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona, and the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid.

A huge part of the collection includes paintings that portray the life of Christ, including the story of His birth. The paintings are absolutely gorgeous, so I figured that it'd be fun to see the story through some beautiful, inspiring art.

I hope that I hope you enjoy these paintings as much as I did, and have a wonderful time contemplating the birth of the Savior during this Christmas season.
The Annunciation by Fra Angelico
"And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.... And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: .... that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word."
The Visitation by Rafael
"And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?"
The Adoration of the Shepherds by Raphael
"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.... Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger... the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger."
The Holy Family with St. Anne by Rubens
"And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ... And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age.. And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem."
The Adoration of the Magi by Rubens
"Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.... When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh."

Hope you enjoyed this, Merry Christmas!
